2024 Year in Review - 4M

What a year 2024 has been!

At 4M, this year wasn't just about expanding our team, customer base, state coverage, or releasing industry-changing capabilities and workflows powered by our advanced AI engine and proprietary data—though those were significant milestones. At its core, the focus in 2024 was clear: Continue providing more value to you, our customers.

By delivering instant, reliable utility data and actionable project insights, we've helped our customers accelerate project planning and kickoffs, pursue smarter, bid faster, and deliver projects on time and on budget. Every innovation, every step forward, was driven by one purpose—creating measurable value for the customers we serve and the critical infrastructure we all rely on.

As we reflect on this transformative year, we’re filled with gratitude. None of this would have been possible without the dedication of our leadership and team, the trust of our customers, and the support of our partners. Thank you for letting us be a part of your success—and for being such an important part of ours.

Here’s to celebrating 2024’s achievements and looking ahead to what we’ll accomplish together in 2025.

The Highlights

In 2024, 4M…

Our Customers:

  • 90% Faster Utility Research: Over 1,000 civil engineers significantly shortened their record research and planning phase by replacing time-consuming manual research with 4M’s instant, reliable utility data.
  • 93% Customer Satisfaction: Our users consistently rate our project data at an impressive 93% satisfaction—proving reliability matters.  Don’t just take our word for it; hear what our customers say →.
  • Cross-Organization Adoption: More than 200 users within a single account, showcasing how teams across organizations leverage our platform.

What We Mapped:

  • Achieved Significant Mapping Milestones: Mapped & delivered 1,600 projects over 1.3 million acres, delivering the critical utility data and insights needed to drive smarter planning and faster project execution.
  • Mapping Expansion Nationwide: With eight states mapped in 2024, including TX, CA, CO, FL, GA, NY, NC, and OR, we’re now adding a state every month. This brings us closer to delivering comprehensive coverage across the U.S. by 2025.

Company Expansion:

  • Expanded our Leadership Team: We hired two new strategic leaders to the 4M family: David Kirkland as Chief Revenue Officer and Shira Stanitzki as Head of Human Resources to strengthen 4M’s culture and to enhance and accelerate our go-to-market strategy.
  • 5 new Board of Advisors: With collective expertise in civil engineering, public sector strategy, business development, and project delivery, their invaluable guidance will drive our innovation, evolution, and expansion as we advance our Utility AI platform. (Watch our new BOA video series →).
  • Grew our Team: Over the year, we've grown and strengthened our team to 105 people—25 in the U.S. and 80 in Israel. These individuals are more than just the backbone of 4M; they are the driving force behind our mission.

Product Features and AI Advancements

  • New Foundation Utility Data Layer: In 2024, we launched the first Utility AI solution to deliver instant, reliable utility data and actionable project insights. Powered by advanced AI and proprietary data, this centralized platform replaces outdated, incomplete records and eliminates time-consuming manual research—helping engineers accelerate project planning and gain a competitive edge in every pursuit.
  • 25 Major Feature Releases: In 2024, we introduced over 25 new features to address critical challenges in early-stage infrastructure planning. These features empower teams to pursue projects smarter, accelerate planning, and deliver on time and within budget.
  • Rapid Utility Data Enhancement: We’ve enhanced our utility data processes to deliver enriched project data within 1–2 business days. This rapid turnaround reduces risk and helps teams stay on schedule, providing verified and actionable data when it’s needed most.
  • Record-Breaking Quarter: In Q4, we delivered 900 projects spanning a record-breaking 4,753 project miles. This achievement demonstrates our growing operational capacity and underscores the increasing demand for digital transformation in infrastructure planning.
  • Advanced AI Object Detection: Our AI identified 555,000 on-surface utility objects this year with 85% accuracy. Using satellite imagery, dashcams, and historical data, we geo-referenced objects like poles, manholes, and valves to ensure confident, data-driven planning.
  • Generative AI Fusion Engine: This advanced AI engine consolidates utility data from millions of public records into a single, comprehensive map. By synthesizing GIS data, visual objects, and metadata, it delivers reliable, actionable insights validated through advanced algorithms and engineering logic, enabling confident and precise decision-making for every project.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next for 2025?

As we step into 2025, our focus remains on delivering a world-class product and user experience that meets and exceeds your expectations. Here’s a sneak peek at what we have in store for the year ahead:

More Utility Data, Higher Quality

  • AI-Enhanced Utility Data Expansion: Adding more utility lines to Foundation Data improves coverage and accuracy, giving engineers the deeper insights needed for smarter and safer infrastructure planning.
  • Automated Data Upgrades: Automated updates to Foundation Data provide critical enhancements in under an hour, ensuring engineers always have accurate and up-to-date information for their projects.
  • Expanded Surface Object Coverage: Adding new object types—such as valves, hydrants, and inlets—delivers a more detailed view of on-the-ground utilities for better project planning.
  • Visual Road Markings: Using road markings as indicators of underground utilities provides clear evidence of utility presence and alignment, improving accuracy during planning.

Smarter Project Planning and Secure Workflows

  • Advanced Utility Insights: Actionable utility insights powered by advanced analytics to support smarter, data-driven decisions during project planning and execution.
  • Portfolio-Level Analytics: Comprehensive insights across all projects enable decision-makers to plan faster and allocate resources more efficiently.
  • New GenAI Agent: A conversational AI assistant designed for utilities. Leveraging Generative AI, it accelerates scoping by delivering precise, real-time project insights from day one, streamlining the early stages of planning.
  • Enterprise-Grade Organization and Security: Improved project organization and access control to ensure secure collaboration across teams and stakeholders.

Transforming Infrastructure with Advanced Utility Data

Increasing costs on materials and components, rising overheads, compressed timelines, and higher competition for bids—the construction industry has little room for error when it comes to maintaining owner cost-benefit and contractor profitability. Any source of uncertainty must be assessed, quantified, and mitigated to ensure successful outcomes. So why does the number one risk factor for transportation construction projects often go unacknowledged?

Texas Utility Environmental Risk Report

Underground utility infrastructure plays a critical role in Texas’s environmental and public health efforts. Yet, despite its scale, spanning more than 1.4 million miles statewide, much of this infrastructure remains unmapped or poorly documented. This lack of visibility and incomplete asset management creates challenges for environmental risk management and compliance with evolving regulations. This is especially relevant in the case of utility lines made from high-risk materials that may be prone to failure and corrosion, or harmful to human and ecological health.

Utility AI Mapping vs Traditional Utility Mapping

Remember the days before we all had Google Maps on our phones? We can time-travel back to the days of printing out MapQuest directions, or further back to the 80s when you had to go buy a physical map and chart your course to your destination before you left your driveway.
